Yes lanugo happens... sadly it is not a myth. It even happens to celebrities, although they probably invest some time in waxing and/or plucking. Here is some Amy Winehouse with lanugo face. The problem is more common in babies who are born prematurely. My history with lanugo thus goes back rather a long way...

I've never had it even when I was down to 69lb and I was shivering cold all day and night. I guess everyone is different
