Katawa Shoujo - Life, the Video Game
There's this new light novel (a type of video game) called Katawa Shoujo. The synopsis is you are a high school boy that's had a heart attack and faces a new life living with a weakened heart at a new school for special needs kids. As you begin your new classes you are able to meet the other students and decide if you want to get to know them better and develop relationships with one of the girls.
When I started this game, I decided to play it as if I was really there, and made all my decisions based on what I believe to be true about the world. I decided to start a relationship with a girl who had survived a terrible trauma and was very fragile emotionally and lonely. I had to be careful with her so she wouldn't get panicked or scared. And it ended with me constantly trying to get her to come out of her shell and open up to me, with no success, knowing almost no more about her at the end of the game than at the beginning. And, that's pretty much how things go with me in real life too. I always want to be the knight, but the damsel refuses to be rescued, while appearing to be on the verge of shattering if I leave her alone.
So I guess the video game has gone full circle. Once was an escape from reality-- now forcing you to deal with reality. It was, saddening. I can always go back and try again but it's not the same because I would have to choose different paths that I know I would never pick in real life.
First time a video game's made me drink.
