    Default Minimizing Harm From Purging

I saw this thread on another board and it was really helpful. We know purging is bad and we shouldn't do it, but as long as we are doing it, we should do everything we can to minimize the damage. So, share some good tips! Here are a few quick ones:

    - do not brush your teeth right after purging, it will only rub in the acid, wait over a half hour

    - drink Gatorade or some other drink with electrolytes because you lose them when you purge and that can lead to a heart attack, a seizure, etc.

    - purging dehydrates you, so stay hydrated, but don't over-hydrate by chugging liters of water, that will only mess up your electrolytes more

    - ...?

And if you're not comfortable with the calories, Powerade does a zero-cal version. I always have Powerade after a purge.

I rinse my mouth with mouthwash immediately and then brush after 30 minutes.
I don't ever touch the back of my throat- that's why I never understood why people said they have marks on their knuckles. I slide my first two fingers back and forth on my tongue and I gag much more easily. No scratches in my throat, no sores on my knuckles.
STOP Think before you write! I do my best to respect people, their age, their experience and their opinions.
I try not to be condescending, rude or cruel to make me feel smart or superior. I do not always succeed, but I do try. This is my polite request from me to you to do the same.

Wait at least 1 hour after purging before eatting anything acidic.
Wash your mouth out with warm milk or water after purging.
    Keep your nails SHORT.
if you use a "tool" make sure it wont easy break.

Gatorade and Powerade are actually very low in potassium compared to coconut water...which I recommend.

Also, I've done a mini-series about harm reduction on my blog, focusing on the more serious issues--because while no one wants knuckle scars or cavities, cardiac arrest and osteoporosis are on a whole different level.

    On minimizing cardiac risks

    On minimizing bone loss

On minimizing injury risk from overexercise with an ED

And of course, we should all remember that no matter how much we try to minimize damage or reduce harm, purging and overexercising and starving are still dangerous at any weight. Be safe!

And if you do use a tool, make sure you have an IRON GRIP on that muthafucka because people HAVE swallowed toothbrushes, spoons, etc while purging...it sounds horrifying. I would probably duct tape my toothbrush to my hand if I used a toothbrush.

    Yes, thanks bmi10

Also, sometimes I chew a tums before a binge. Acid ruins your teeth, but worse it can cause a tear in your esophagus
