Baking soda side effects?
Sooo.... Recently I've found it getting harder to purge manually (I guess my gag reflex is going... was bound to happen). So I started drinking baking soda to help (btw it's gross. If you haven't done it, DON'T TRY IT.)
I was just wondering if anyone knew if there were any long term health issues that are associated with consuming baking soda (I guess it does come right back out, but still)? From experience or just medical knowledge?
I don't think it can be as bad as bleach or other chemicals. But it does feel like I'm doing the baking soda/vinegar volcano science experiment in my stomach, and that cannot be a good thing...
Baking soda is awful for you! When I'm super low I'll do it and I have to keep inceasing the amounts. Uh... It really sucks... At a low dosage it helps you purge... If you take too much, it speeds you up... You can't purge, you can't sleep, you're going crazy bc you can't sleep or purge.
Erm... the first few times I did it I loved it bc it seriously cleared EVERYTHING out of me but now it only gets some stuff and makes me sicker than food poisoning!
Don't do it!!All my life I've tried to make everyone happy while I just hurt and hide,
Waiting for someone to tell me its my turn to decide...
Who cares if you disagree? YOU ARE NOT ME!
Who made you king of anything?

Thank you. I knew baking soda was bad for you, but most of the warnings I've seen were talking about making you naseous or making you vomit... which to me was the point. But I didn't know that it could actually speed you up slash make you actually sick (though I probably should have deduced something along those line. This whole ED kinda makes me blind to some health risks). I planned on stopping using it, but now I have some real info to keep in the back of my head when I'm tempted.
Glad to see you're planning to stop, I just wanted to share my experience with using baking soda. Using baking soda almost always throws my electrolytes out of whack and causes major cramps and twitching. To get rid of the cramps, I usually have to eat (and keep down) something high in potassium (spinach, low-sodium V8, a banana) because the tablets they sell in the drugstore don't seem to help. It also dries my skin out and exacerbates dehydration because it is sodium (which elevates blood pressure), after all. What Marialise said also partially applies to me; the more I use baking soda, the more I have to drink to get the same results. And we both know how disgusting it can be. I read a story about a man (who was a food critic) who was on vacation and had overeaten. He drank some baking soda to help with heartburn and it caused him to suffer from an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which killed him. So between the electrolyte imbalances, elevation of blood pressure, and potential for an AAA, I definitely would stay away from the stuff if you can.
EDA: When I first started using baking soda, it caused MAJOR diarrhea and I would have to stop mid-purge to take bathroom breaks. It seems to be a pretty common occurrence, according to a google search for "soda loading."
