I think the predisposition of mental illness for people with eating disorders is really common. In any case, I definitely am-- my father has major depressive disorder, suffers alcoholism, and some things I don't know the details of as well, and, well, my mother's a sociopath. Hah.
I think, further than genetics, the effect of a parent being mentally ill could push eating disorder tendencies as well. But then, I have my own list a mile long of disorders.

Bipolar disorder runs on my moms side and schizophrenia runs on my dad's side. And i am bipolar and schizoaffective. However i am the only one in my family that has been diagnosed with eating disorders and ocd. I was also dxed with ptsd but thats not a hereditary disorder.

i definitely think EDs are mental illnesses, but i think they involve lots of issues, not just eating- like definitely DEPRESSION, perfectionism, wanting to control something in your life, feeling insecure, etc.
i had severe depression a few years ago. after going to a psychiatrist for a year, i recovered, but i still struggle with it every now and then. i'm pretty sure depression runs in my family a little bit. i think my mom has OCD tendencies as well.
most anorexics are perfectionists i think, Type A personality.

none of my immediate family have had any mental illness, apart from an auntie who got manic depression and went a bit crazy and had to go inpatient for a while.
So yes, it can be in your genetics but doesn't have to be x
I understand ED's as a mental illness but no one in my family has ever admitted to a mental illness, although I had depression on and off for a few years, although i think that was liked to mia.

Suffering of people for any reason, the Internet can provide ready-made support. Obsessive-compulsive disorder, for example, you can visit the blog, forums, mental health website, and personal health care provider's Web site dedicated to the chaos.

your temperament (personality you're born with) characteristics can regulate whether or not you have any mental illnesses, which is generally inherited, so it can often run in families, but not always :)

yes they are mental illnesses. What mentally healthy person would do what we do? I also have depression and suspect a couple other things but am the only person in my family with mental health problems. Some of my family members don't have the best coping skills but they don't have mental disorders. It makes me wonder why I am different from the rest of my family.

I believe it is. My mother suffers from depression and anxiety. She has never admitted it but I believe she was abusing laxatives at one time.
