Clearly this may be a triggering topic.
But I'm curious

My Dr on Friday was talking about what an average person on a diet would be eating. She said 800-1000 calories was ideal for a diet/losing weight. I didn't question her, we've only met 3 times and it wasn't an appropriate time. Prior to this I'd heard 1200-1500 was normal diet range.
My question is.... is this normal??? I always heard this was extreme! So I was slightly taken aback. It's starvation, right?. The naggin ED inside was saying, "you need to eat less, even normal ppl are doing this" type of thinking.
I can see clearly none of all the above is healthy generally.
I just think, well I don't know. Mixture of things.
But yes, 800-1000? Extreme, right?

800-1000 is NOT normal for a diet! Definitely not ideal! That is definitely not enough. Most people need 1200 MINIMUM just to keep their body running properly and keep their organs healthy. I think your doctor has no idea what a normal person NEEDS. :/

Get a new doctor. You need way more than that. How is this person allowed to practice medicine?

agree, its relatively unhealthy to lose weight by eating less, its better to eat more and create a calorie deficit with exercise.... i think

Yes I agree that completely an un health intake but you have to think about it as in most people who want to lose weight will only do this for a short amount of time and will be exersising =burn cals and eating healthy = low in cals so it could come out to a total of 1000 which I suppose could be okay depending on your height. 800 seems extream but my mom has a '800 calories week' after the holidays and I would believe her docter knows and she still does it so maybe it is okay.... no no wait no this isnt okay no... right?

I've heard that cutting back 200-500 calories is healthy for weight loss. So if you are suppose to be eating about 2,000 calories a day, than 1,500-1,800 is enough to lose weight and still be healthy. It changes all the time though. Anything under 1,200 is going into the unhealthy zone and below a 1,000 is considered starvation mode. Or close to it.
