View Full Version : Problems with Asymmetry ?

I was talking to my friend earlier about how I get obsessed with how asymmetric my body is, and she just laughed because she couldn't see it.
Little things like how my right thigh is bigger than my left, my right foot is bigger than my left, my left eye opens wider than my right, my mouth pulls to the left slightly, my left hip bone is more rounded than my right, and even the fact my left thumb is longer than my right. These really are minor things and I know no one's body is perfect, but i just get obsessed with these things so often. Sometimes I even find my self walking weird to compensate for how unbalanced I think my body is, and I've stood in front of the mirror for hours, trying to figure out which poses and expressions make me look the most balanced when I know that no one will even notice even after I point it out.

I'm so glad I found this! It is sorta funny how we take things to another level. Honestly, I think my BDD is the root of my ed.
It is said that nobody is perfectly symmetrical. But I think some are more obvious. For me for example, I think one side of my waist is different than the other. My left is nice and curvy or whatever and the other side is flat and has not curves. I really hate it.
I'm trying to do yoga/stretches to help. Perhaps you should do the same. Pilate's is supposed to be great too.
And we are def more critical of ourselves.

I do this too... my left arm is slightly fatter than my right (by half a cm i measured!), my right thigh is fatter too... my left foot is longer than the right... *sigh* :(
I think the left hipbone sticks out more than the right too... But whenever I've made comments about it people have laughed and told me to stop being so ridiculous! Some days I look in the mirror and all i can see if fat, but then the next day i'll wake up and I swear I look loads thinner... and vice versa it's so bizzare because I know you can't lose or put on like 10 stone over night :/

My right clavicle juts out higher than the other and my boobs... I think one is slightly bigger than the other o.O

Asymmetry between the left and right sides of your body is completely natural. In certain individuals it can be more noticeable, but it's no deformity. I know a lot of girls hate that one of their breasts is slightly larger than the other, but that is very common. I personally find asymmetry to be interesting and beautiful...(as long as its not on me...hence the questionable mindset). If nature intended us to be symmetrical, then we would lose a lot of bodily diversity. All I can say is to try not to feel too insecure about it. As an artist I will tell you, it's perfectly ok. Anyone who says that symmetry is the unit by which beauty is measured has obviously never studied proper anatomy.

Yeah, things are naturally asymmetrical.
I have asymmetrical sides too. The reason for it? My other leg is a bit longer than my other one so it creates a curve in my body that can be seen as different curves on my side - other one is "curvy" other one is "flat". No matter how much yoga I did, it will never go away.
Also, my face is totally asymmetrical and it's driving me nuts. I hate to have a photograph taken as I can see how different my eyes are, my nose, my mouth. In my head it just distorts more and more and more until I feel like a mutant who should never go out to be seen by humans.
I don't recognize if I have BDD or not. I know these things are normal, things that people just live with. I do feel somewhat strongly about them but I'm of course very oriented to see superficial things because of my ED. I also notice asymmetrical things on other people, trying to see clues that I'm not the only one. There just is no symmetrical human being.

...Yes, I know it's natural too. But it still makes me sad. I'm an artist as well and I find most forms of the human body to be beautiful and intriguing, but when it is myself... things are so different. I am a bit more picky.
