I "think happy thoughts". It doesn't always work, but it's like... If you try to calm yourself down or distract yourself, then you won't be all worried about not getting to sleep, so you might actually fall asleep. And if not, then at least you'll get some rest until you can fall asleep.
Also, caffeine an hour or two before you go to sleep might (MIGHT, no guarantees) help, because you could get really tired after the caffeine wears off. That happens to be 90% of the time. =)
Or just read the Scarlet Letter... >.<

LOL! i was thinking about trying to read my bio text book
I suffer very bad insomnia & I wake up 3 - 4 times throughout the night, I just wish I could find a way to just stay asleep once I manage to get to sleep, 4 hours is all I get on a daily basis at most :(.

=( My best friend is like that. Get a job or something. That seems to help him fall asleep and stay asleep. =)

I have chronic insomnia diagnosed by my doctor and im at the point where strong sleeping medications no longer work. Ive been hospitalised before now because of it as I got to about 7 days and I began to hallucinate. I tend to go 3 or 4 days and then eventually just sleep when my body can take no more. I hate night times so much and it causes so much anxiety for me which just makes the whole process far worse so its a vicious circle. The insomnia tends to come in bouts and ill sleep ok for like a week or so (when i say ok, im talking 5 hours MAX a night, and thats a good night) but then when I get a bout of insomnia,. I always get it bad. Its horrendous :-(
