Has anyone seen it?

I saw it tonight, it was quite good, very scary and dark. Natalie Portman is so skinny, Mila Kunnis as well, actually everyone looks like a rail in it but you see Natalie's body the most. The film was quite good separate from the Natalie and Mila's weight

Oh I'm glad this movie is living up to its promise, though I'm pissed off about Natalie P. and her father's remarks about having to kiss another woman.

i am sooooo excited to see this! Glad you thought it was good! Mila was on Jimmy Kimmel tonight and they talked about her weight for quite abit. She said she was 117 now and got down to 95 for the movie. She also talked about how she worked out for 5-6 months for the movie like 5 hours a day and ate 5 times a day totaling 1200 calories.

I want to see this movie so badly!!! If anyone has a link to watch it online let me know, Im dying to see it!!! I can't believe she got to 95 pounds! Why wouldnt she want to stay there?? I guess that's what seperates us from normal people :/ sigh. Oh well I wish I was 95 pounds.... How AMAZING would it be to see the scale at 2 digits instead of 3 - I think I would have a heart attack out of sheer joy...

Honestly she didn't look that great she was so bony and on film that looks a bit weird. But it really is a good film, so claustrophobic and disturbing. It will be hard to see it online because it's in such limited release. It was only in 3 movie theaters near where I live ( a major city). I wish i could find film stills at least.

Also the movie is just Black Swan, I am not sure why I put a preposition beforehand. I guess it was late.

all I can say is... holy shit, what an incredible, engrossing and disturbing movie. I've never identified with a character so much - down to the self-mutilation by raking her skin with her nails. Anyone else seen it yet? What did you think?

I loved it too- watched it last night. There's quite a little tiff on the internet about whether it "encourages" anorexia or not. They're just arguing over whether anorexia is something that can be encouraged or not.

However, I have to agree with the articles that are calling it "eating disorder porn." The self-mutilation, the quest for perfection, the general spiral into insanity, all combined with those prominent bones and gorgeously tiny bodies. It is kind of like porn for the eating disorder.

I saw it Sunday night, and it's amazing! I loved every second of it!

However, I don't think it "encourages" an eating disorder. It's just accurate. This really is (besides the going insane part) what being a dancer is. And I liked that about it.

It was very good, I had to cover my face at times, it was so gory :P

I saw it today and WOW!!! She was totally having Schizophrenic symptoms. I really loved the movie but it disturbed me ALOT...I can toally see where it could be a metaphor for ED's. Especially all the scenes with Lily. Also, I hate to say this but everytime I saw her throw-up I kept thinking "Wow, I wish it was that easy for me!" I think this movie disturbed me b/c first I know what the ballet world is like and all the pressure that you feel coming up to a role. Also, though I saw myself (minus the Schizo symptoms) in Nina: soft spoken, non-confrontational, acts like a little girl, overprotective mother, can't lose control at all, ect. Anyways, I really liked the dancing in this movie...beautiful, I just wanted to put my pointe shoes on. I also came home and hopped on the treadmill after seeing all those tiny bodies!

did she vomit out of nervousness or to purge?

i'm pretty sure the first time she was purging, and the second time, when they actually showed her running to the toilet and vomiting, it was because she was having sort of a nervous breakdown.

Saw it on Friday night and LOVED IT. It's generally hit or miss as far as Darren Aronofsky films go for me - I adored "Pi", hated "Requiem" (mostly because it scared the shit out of me), but I mean, "Black Swan" has Natalie Portman, an engrossing classical score and a charismatic Mila Kunis - what's not to like?

However, I have to agree with the articles that are calling it "eating disorder porn." The self-mutilation, the quest for perfection, the general spiral into insanity, all combined with those prominent bones and gorgeously tiny bodies. It is kind of like porn for the eating disorder.

OMG YES. So, so triggering it's not even funny...

Hmm. I'd been dying to know her weight in this film...that's about what I'd guessed (between 92-95 at 5'3). Mila Kunis lost roughly the same amount apparently...

It was quite a gory film...but most of the blood/gore was "squimish" gore. I realize that watching things like someone peeling a hangnail back is harder for me than watching buckets of blood or something (I guess 'cause over-the-top gore is so ridiculous). "Black Swan" reminds me of the movie "May" with Angela Bettis in that respect...

I saw it a couple of days ago and I was completely blown away! I was expecting something amazing since both Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman were involved, but damn...it was way better than I anticipated! And Natalie Portman was so fucking skinny; I was green with envy the entire movie. I was also kind of freaked out at how easily I was able to relate to her character. Her inner turmoil and self destructive tendencies kinda hit too close to home if you know what I mean, haha. It was difficult to watch at some points; I just wanted to cry and yell, "I know how you feel!"

Natalie portman was so thin you could hear the crowd literally gasp when she would suck in or raise her arms. she literally looked like a little boy. other than that i liked the film. i can see why so many of my guy friends were into it lol
though i did have difficulty telling which parts she was actually crazy town and what was real. i enjoyed the idea of odette being insane rather than having a 'black swan' twin.

No way out.

^ I do think it has a bit to do with the type of violence/gore in the films. Coen bro/Tarantino films - very OTT bloody, gory (Think Kill Bill). Black Swan - squeamish gore. I'm telling you, it's much easier to watch buckets of blood 'cause it's so ridiculous as opposed to "squeamish" scenes with less blood.

OK, what was the ending about?

*****Don't want to spoil ending if you haven't seen it.*****

Are we meant to think she does kill herself? I think so - I remember in the beginning the director saying that the only way the white swan can find freedom is in death. Is Nina's death a metaphorical one - referring more to her loss of innocence?

As a dancer at a full-time school with studios that look scarily like the ones in Black Swan (dark, dingy, brick, no windows) I can tell you that there are definitely more problems that can easily be developed by dancers than just eating disorders.
Yes it is a beautiful art form, I totally agree...but to get it looking that beautiful you have to go through a lot of crap. Many girls at my school have major phycological problems as well as dealing with physical problems like injuries. We are constantly stressed, tired, have to get up at 5.30 each morning and don't finish dancing until 8pm some nights (which is over 12 hours of practical dancing classes).
I LOVED ballet when I was a kid and I would love for my kids to get to experience the same enjoyment that I had. But I'm just saying if they continue to dance full-time when they are older, an eating disorder is not the only possible "downside" for dancers.
This isn't a rant or anything directed at you "in it to win it," I just kinda felt like voicing my opinion on the subject :)

I also wasn't sure about the end. I suspected that she would kill herself in the end just like the white swan is supposed to in the ballet. I felt as though everything up to that point (her turning into a swan and how she thought that Lily was trying to take her place, etc.) was all just phycological. But her death was real because she had pushed herself through so much, that the ballet and the character that she was trying to create all drove her towards ending her life.
To be honest I'm not sure though, I'd like to hear other's opinions on this too! :)

Is it too sick to say I found that movie inspirational as in the difficult struggle to be perfect.......How Nina " let" herself die for something she loved....She could have saved herself but that would make her a failure.....All the audience saw was her perfection not the sickness behind it no one ever see 's that..... The movie is so good I can relate to the insanity of it all...Peeling away your innocence and becoming your true self....

Okay, TBH, that made me re-consider! I really don't want to optionally put my own kids (whenever that happens) in such a situation. So thank you for giving me an actual honest opinion, and an outlook of ballet. I don't see it as a rant, I see it more as you making me more aware of the realities, I suppose, of what I could potentially put my kids in. And I don't want that. I reallyy love ballet, it's just so meaningful, but I know my kids will be much more important. As much as I may have wanted that, I guess I'll put that dream away. I mean c'mon, I hate my life, and that's without being a dancer. . .

But you say you loved ballet as a kid, so it wasn't as harmful then as it is now, at your age?

Stayed up past 3am watching it. It was interesting, very schizophrenic, with SI and ED thrown in. I did like the imagery involved with her anxiety induced psychotic break and re-emergence of SI tendencies. As far as the ending goes, I don't think it really mattered what was 'reality' and what was hallucination/delusion, they were intertwined throughout the entire movie. I watched it online, so I think that the visual imagery would be much more profound had I seen it in better quality or on the movie screen. As far as the ED perspective goes, yes, it was triggering to see "Nina" that thin. On the other hand, the sick part of me thought "ha, I've been thinner than that!" Oh, and the transformation into the Black Swan was amazing, even on my tiny computer screen!!!

I interpreted it to be that Nina was the white swan and Lily was the black swan (she had the black wings tattooed, a visual symbol) and that Thomas was suppossed to be her "prince" (I know that he was cruel to her, but she was in love with him). Nina felt Lily was stealing her prince (as the black swan does) and so she does, indeed, kill herself. She thinks that she has somehow beat the stories outcome in the scene where she thinks she has killed Lily (when she shoves her into the mirror and stabs her with a shard) but really she is killing her inner black swan, letting her inner white swan win, which is why she 'sets herself free'.

It was a pretty heavy movie. I once read an article where this guy was making fun of himself for buying " Requiem For a Dream", because who wants to come home and watch that movie everynight? I will buy "Black Swan" when it comes out, because I found it to be relatable with inner struggles. Everyone has them, and anyone who claims that they won't watch a heavy movie over again just because it's a "downer" or whatever obviously doesn't think of the bad days they will have in the future, where an art form like this could comfort them.

I really enjoyed that interpretation. (On a side-note, I thought that tattoo was absolutely beautiful!)

And I'm glad I read this cause I decided not to buy Black Swan for that very reason - it scared me to death that I could relate so well. But I think you're right, it could be healing to watch it on a bad day.

I saw this last week but was underwhelmed. Yes, i enjoyed it, but i was expecting more. And i didn't find it to be that disturbing. Give me 'Blue Valentine' any day. Go see!!

edit* I forgot to add that i saw Black Swan after 2 large glasses of red wine, so it's possible i might love it to bits if i saw it sober?

I saw it a few weeks back before valentines, it is stunning!!! I think its easy to relate to her in some way too, from self-harming, Bulimia, her shyness and her desire to be perfect- whatever the cost. :)

Have to see it if you can.

I just watched it after seeing this thread a while ago. I can honestly say that was an hour and 43 mins of pure trigger. :P That being said, it was beautifully done and, yes, very relatable, except for the fact that I really dislike Natalie Portman's off-camera personality.

watched it 2 weeks ago and by the time it ended I was completely freaked out. being in the theatre world and dealing with ED you can easily see why. amazing and dark at the same time. loved it but I don't think I'll ever watch it again (just like with "Requiem for a Dream")

Yeahhh, this is probably going against what everyone else said, but I didn't read all 10 pages or whatever, and as a dancer, I have a very strong opinion on this film, haha.

--NP and MK were thin, but it wouldn't have been believable had they not lost weight, especially since they were in a company standing in for NYCB (which is recognized for the "balanchine body"). Frankly, NP still wasn't that convincing as a ballet dancer, because her proportions are off; her arms and legs are too short. You could see the difference when her dance double, Sarah Lane, was standing in.
--It painted professional ballet in an INCREDIBLY melodramatic and inaccurate light. I'm a former ballet dancer and I have an ED--but I'm "former" BECAUSE of the ED. I know quite a few successful dancers who are very healthy; they may watch what they eat (and smoke too much), but EDs are not a "given" by any means. And it's not all dark and depressing. You work hard, you sacrifice, your toes bleed. But most dancers (including my friends in ABT and NYCB) have fairly normal, happy lives.
--and WTF was up with one dancer for the role of Odette/Odile? In real life, there would be several principles (or guests) dancing the female lead, and some companies have different dancers on Odette and Odile.

It was an entertaining movie and an interesting character study, but not an apt portrait of the dance world, and not worth the fuss it got ED-wise.

I loved it!

I saw it at the cinema and just bought it on DVD.

I agree that it was easy to relate with the character and found it really intense.

While I agree with the points you have I don't think the film intended to portray the life of a ballerina accurately. Of course it was over-dramatized (if that word even exists, lol) and the media blew certain components of the story up, I liked "Black Swan" nevertheless :) I actually got the DVD last week.
