50 in the morning, 100 when I get home from wherever I've been, and 50 after "dinner", usually. At weekends or holidays I do 300 or so.

I love that "tightness" (not a great word, sorry) you get in your back and abs after finishing them ^_^ It just reminds you that it's all worthwhile...

"Leg lifts" or "six-inches" (whatever you call them) are also great for lower abdominal muscles. :)

I think everyone exercise range if different so to say a certain number or crunches is kind of worthless.
And also crunches are pretty limited, you need a larger range of exercises to do to keep your whole body toned, not just stomach.

It's funny but I only get that with "toning" exercises... cardio just bores me xD It's not like I can't do it, it just... I don't know, I never really feel like I've achieved anything by the end of it. Hmm.

Anyhoos, sorry for the slight off-topic-ness

No, "leg lifts" are where you lie on you back with your legs straight and together and life them anywhere between 6-18" off the ground. Slowly and controlled. IF you are doing them correctly, you will definitely feel some burning in the lower abs!!

My routine is to do a minimum of 200 crunches, and 40 sets of iso abs, aka planks or whatever you like to call them. Twice a week, I do 45 mins of solid ab work, including the leg lifts, reverse crunches, some pilates moves and probably a thousand or so regular crunches. Three times a week, I use the crunch and backward crunch and iso ab machines at my gym for about 100 reps each. It took about 4 months of this to see a real six pack.

I do a quick ab workout when I remember dubbed: 6 Minute Abs
You do every exercise in order repeating or shuffled around (as long as you get to all of them) for 30 second each.
Switch moves every 30 seconds for 6 minutes. In each interval you do as many repetitions of the exercises that you can

1)I do these crunches instead because I never have anywhere to tuck my feet.

Then I do

2) Side crunches. (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) Like her, but with legs on the ground.

3)Switch sides on side crunches.

4)Leg Lifts. Hands under the butt. Lifting with control and not letting your feet touch the ground.

5) Flutter Kicks. Hands under the butt.

6)Legs out on the ground. Hands under butt. Crunch your upper body up. I always do this one last because it's the easiest. (:

Then do a combo of these exercises for the whole 6 minutes. Add in your own to make things more fun!

HOLY CRAP.
This guy has a great combo of exercises for everyone to check out. He does Parkour and he'd be really good looking if not for his hair, not a big fan.

traditional crunch/sit-ups are bad for you!!

basically says that a crunch or traditional sit-up generates 340 kg of compressive force on the spine. which cant be good for the spine lol

thought id share

even though i agree that they put alot of pressure on your spine, if you're going to do them team them with sit ups..
apparently sit ups tone the outer stomach muscles and sit ups do the inner.

i find squats with weights are good for tummies plus running.

pilates is great for toning.

i think if you find the balance you like between cardio (burn up fat) and toning exercises you should do alright :-)

please correct me if ive said anything incorrect!

oh yeah!!! and the plank is good as above!

I do my crunches every other day usually,
it just fits with my schedual that way.
But i do a kind of complicated set of crunches.

I do three different types of crunches.
First, 15 of each (doing type one, then two, the the last kind)
Then 10 of each.
Then 5 of each.
Then i usually tack on another 30 or so regular crunches at the end.

Totalling: 120 crunches.

Then if im feeling extra fat, ill do the same thing, but start at 20. (so 20 of each, then 15, 10, then 5)

Totalling 150 + 120 = 270 crunches every other day.
